major networks. SchoolWrite may also be used on a single PC.
DOWN-LOAD-ONCE feature:
SchoolWrite software converts to a fully licensed version with a
User Registration Key sent to you via email. Software evaluation,
ordering, AND installation can be completed TODAY.

3. Full Installation instructions
Unzip the file swkids23.ZIP (with PKUNZIP 2.04g)
It is recommended that you create a directory \SW on your hard disk.
Copy the following files into this (unused) directory:
INSTALL1.BAT
ORDER.DOC
README.1ST
SWPACK.EXE
FILE_ID.DIZ
3.1 Installation:
3.1.1 Under MS-DOS:
You need to be in the directory where SchoolWrite resides:
e.g. CD \SW
Type:
INSTALL1
3.1.1 Under WINDOWS 3.1:
In Program Manager, pull down the <F>ile menu, and select
<R>un.
In the Command Line box, type: C:\SW\INSTALL1
SchoolWrite is self-installing. You need only hit <ENTER> to agree
to various questions along the way. SchoolWrite self-instals in
about 1 minute.
A FULLY LICENSED version of SchoolWrite may be registered at any
time from the Demonstration system. Simply run the SchoolWrite
program, and select the 'Register software now' option.
3.2 RUNNING SCHOOLWRITE:
3.2.1 Under MSDOS:
You need to be in the directory where SchoolWrite resides:
e.g. CD \SW
Type:

This gives a simple DOS menu from which to choose:
SchoolWrite, BACKING UP SchoolWrite files (assumes DOS 3+
BACKUP program is available), and RESTORING SchoolWrite files
(assumes DOS 3+ RESTORE program is available).

<B>rowse in the directory C:\SW.
Select SWRITE.ICO
OK Click on this button.
A SchoolWrite icon will now appear in your Windows Group (a
floppy disk with a pencil).
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3.3 Optionally Modifying Your Environment Variables
An environment variable (SWSET=) may be required to be set,
depending on the configuration of your computer.
You will only need to set this environment variable if you have "DOS
ERROR 4" problems (Too many open files .. no handles left), or "Out
of memory" problems, when running SchoolWrite.
Solving "DOS Error 4" problem:
SET SWSET=//F:31
(Important NOT to type spaces before or after the "=" sign)
The above environment setting overrides the "FILES=nn" setting, in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This variable is automatically set in the
SWRUN.BAT file that is usually used to execute SW. If SWRUN.BAT is
not used for some reason, then it is important for the environment
setting to be included in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Solving "Out of memory" problem:
If you get "Out of memory" messages when attempting to run SW.EXE,
then the following environment setting should be made in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SET SWSET=//E:0
Solving "DOS Error 4" AND "Out of memory" problems:
If you require BOTH the <F>iles setting AND the <E>xtended memory
setting, use the following format:
SET SWSET=//F:31 //E:0
(Note: there is a single blank space between settings)

4. Online Documentation
A complete documentation manual with professional appearance may be
printed on your laser or dot matrix printer. Double-sided printing
is supported, and a Table of Contents indexed with page numbers is
provided. See Miscellaneous Menu, Option 6 "Print Documentation".
The chapters of the on-line documentation are also available as
on-screen help. Each chapter is a NOTEPAD file, which can be
called to the screen AT ANY STAGE during operation of SW Software by
hitting the <F7> key.
Documentation files, when selected into the display screen of
NOTEPAD, *cannot* be modified (in the same way that regular NOTEPAD
word processing files can). Documentation files are a different
color (yellow printing on a black background), and the word
*Documentation* appears at the bottom of the screen.
Documentation chapters (files) are noted below.

8. SHAREWARE:
8.1 What SHAREWARE is:
Shareware describes a method of distributing copyrighted software in
which a user is free to evaluate the software before purchasing it.
After an evaluation period, the user is honor-bound to register the
product if he decides to keep using it.
Shareware distribution addresses all of the legitimate complaints
that users have with commercial software distribution.
o Shareware allows a user to fully evaluate a product, free of
charge, in his or her home, *before* deciding to buy it.
o Shareware programs can circulate freely through electronic
networks, through Shareware disk distributors, or through user
groups.
o Shareware authors can often be more responsive to users'
requests for help or bug fixes than large software companies.
o Shareware software, needless to say, is never copy-protected.
In short, Shareware is a dream come true for school administrators
and for teachers. Users show their appreciation to developers for
this extremely flexible distribution scheme by registering their
software.
The Shareware version of SchoolWrite gives unlimited access to the
Students component. The Demonstration version gives access to the
FULL functions of SchoolWrite's five administration components and 3
accounting components. There is an inbuilt limit to the maximum
records in the Demonstration software. To register, a license fee
must be paid to BBA Software. In response, a User Registration
Key will be issued, which will allow the running of the components
paid for, with unlimited file sizes. The license name (your school
or college) will appear on the tops of all print-outs.
8.2 What SHAREWARE is not:
Shareware is not "free" software. Shareware is not Public Domain
software. Any fee that you may have paid to receive a Shareware
program does not mean that the software has been paid for. A network
service provider, a disk vendor, or a Bulletin Board Service, may
have covered their cost of getting the program to you, but they have
not sold the licensed rights to the software. SchoolWrite software
is paid for by registering your copy with BBA Software.

9. The History of SchoolWrite:
SchoolWrite Version 2 has been under development for three years.
During that period it has been in constant use by schools throughout
Australia. SchoolWrite was originally developed for the Unix
operating system. As a multi-user school administration system, the
Unix version has the same design features of Version 2, with a
number of extra modules. SchoolWrite Version 2 for MSDOS also enjoys
the same multi-user benfits, as it is compatible with all major
networks.
Major private schools in Australia use SchoolWrite as the central
core to their school administration and billing of fees. Version 1
was developed for PC's in Xenix and Unix, first in 1983, and
development of Version 1 continues today with a long term future.
Version 2 has been in use since 1993, providing all of the benefits
of its predecessor, along with the added benefits of the DOS user
interface, and self-installation. Development and support for
Version 1 will continue whilst ever UNIX is around, and Version 2
will continue whilst ever MSDOS and Windows are around. We are
looking forward to a long future!
